The Charlotte Music Awards will host its first Blues Showcase at the Double Door Inn on Thursday, Jan. 24, starting at 8 p.m. Performing at the showcase will be Bayou Butch, the Contagious Blues Band, Archie Huntley (Golden Eagle) and WSNB.
The Charlotte Music Awards showcases all aspects of original music in Charlotte and the Carolinas. The initiative supports local music and local artists. Showcases are hosted at different venues across a variety of genres, leading up to an annual Awards Ceremony, the first of which was held in September at Ovens Auditorium. The performers for the Blues Showcase are as follows:
- Alfred “Bayou Butch” Lucas Jr. has a trademark sound inherited from old school blues, funk and R&B. He refined his innovative sound while on tour with Al Green, Aretha Franklin and a host of other blues legends. Bayou Butch’s multitalented style takes one back in time with the sounds from his “Old Blue” Fender guitar and grand piano.
- The Contagious Blues Band features a “multi-vocalist” approach, accompanied by two styles of guitar playing. The band seemingly takes you through the evolution of blues music during its set with the influence of traditional blues mixed with the new blues-rock sound.
- Archie Huntley, also known as Golden Eagle, was recently featured as a studio musician in the movie Shake, Rattle, and Roll with blues legend B.B. King. Huntley says he feels the blues and that his “music comes from years of living the blues and turning it into music that is drawn from the heart and the soul.”
- From the foothills of western North Carolina, WSNB breathes new life into old-style blues, sometimes with a rock ’n’ roll touch. The band’s distinctive lyrics and down-home style are straight from the soul. WSNB will “make your hips shake, your feet move and your big toe jump up in yo’ boot!”
Charlotte’s “Home of the Blues,” the Double Door is located at 1218 Charlottetowne Ave. (formerly 218 E. Independence Blvd.) across from CPCC. The venue, which recently celebrated its 34th anniversary, has been bringing regional and national acts to Charlotte since its inception.

The Charlotte Music Awards will host a Country Showcase at Puckett’s Farm Equipment on Thursday, Nov. 29, starting at 8 p.m. Performers for the showcase include David Cody, Greg Griffin, David Lambert and the Smokey Joe Show.
The Charlotte Music Awards showcases all aspects of music in Charlotte and the Carolinas. The initiative supports local music and local artists. Showcases are hosted at different venues across a variety of genres, leading up to an annual Awards Ceremony, the first of which was held in September at Ovens Auditorium.
The featured performers for the Country Showcase are as follows:
David Cody of Swannanoa, N.C., recently released The Dale Earnhardt Tribute Album. Although numerous songs have honored Earnhardt, Cody says there are “none with more thought and love than these 12 songs.” A Cow Skeleton Records recording artist, Cody’s previous CDs include Pieces of My Heart, Livin’ Low and, as Cody & Webb, Until My Train Rolls In.
Greg Griffin, who hails from Huntersville, is a contender in Country Music Television’s current Music City Madness. Griffin says that music is inside him and it’s got to come out. “Melodies and lyrics pop in my head and I need to write them down and sing them out loud so they won’t stay stuck there,” Griffin says. “Most of my songs are about people finding a place in this world.”
Spartanburg-based David Lambert is not your typical musician. A retired Army colonel, his musical commitment shifted into high gear after seeing singer-songwriter Chris Knight perform in Charlotte. The devotion paid off when Lambert was named the best Male Horizon Country/Pop Vocalist 2007 at the Entertainment Indie-Association (EIA) Awards Ceremony. His debut CD is titled By the Carolina Moon.
The Smokey Joe Show offers homegrown original music. The band consists of “Smokey Joe” Peoples (songwriter, rhythm guitar and vocals), Chelsea Goodman (vocals and egg shaker), Tom Rogers (harmonicas), Darryl Goodman (electric bass), Lonny Finley (lead guitars, mandolin and vocals) and George Brasington (drums). The band has just released a new CD, Little Buildings.
Puckett’s Farm Equipment is located at 2740 W. Sugar Creek Rd. in the heart of historic Derita. The venue has long been home to the finest roots music, country, alt-country and Americana acts on the regional scene.

The title of his first hit, “Guitar Boogie,” became his nickname. Arthur’s guitar style on “Guitar Boogie” influenced such future stars as Glen Campbell, Eric Clapton, Roy Clark, Paul McCartney and Tom Petty. Smith may be best known for “Dueling Banjos,” which appeared in the film Deliverance and was BMI’s Song of the Year in 1973. The song, originally titled “Feuding Banjos,” was written in 1955. |

Wadsworth House (400 S. Summit Ave.) in Charlotte.
The evening of music and memories of Miles Davis features a rare appearance by
